Descriptions:
This is a fan-made unofficial reworking of the classic chart break through single by The Human League that was released in 1981 and reached number in the UK charts. This is one of the best songs of the new romantic/new wave period and the original version still sounds great after so much time.
This is one of those songs that if you start tinkering too much you will up with something that is just complete bonkers. In my view, certainly for people of my generation, this song is hard wired into the brain and anything too far off the beaten track will not work. For new listeners, with no prior baggage etc then something completely different might work, but that is not why this channel exists anyway. The general modus operandi for this channel is that I try to respect the original composition and celebrate the late 1970s to early 1980s.
Incidentally, have you heard the demo version of the original. If not, here it is.
Humble beginnings can generate great things and this demo demonstrates very clearly where they were heading as a group. With the help of Martin Rushent, he made this demo into something chart worthy. The rest is history.
For me, this song captures the period of 1981 very well. I was just getting properly into music and there were all these new bands using synthesisers with different fashions. It was an exciting time where new approaches to music were being used inspired by new technology, glam rock, sci fi literature, liberal democracy and new fashions and styles.
I have a daughter and I often listen to her music when we are travelling. There is nothing wrong with the music she plays. The singers are very accomplished. The production is always very good. But, I wonder where the next music revolution is going to come from in terms of style/approach (and I am not talking about AI music because so far that has not created anything new – correct me if I am wrong in the comments). Maybe I grew up in a time when there was an opportunity to do new things – perhaps music has now explored all possible avenues? I don’t believe that. I am sure there will be some form of music revolution in the future and I am looking forward to it if I am still alive when it arrives. And, I say it again, so far AI music has not created anything new – its has diluted the money available for music makers and it has helped to increase the supply of music dramatically, but I have heard nothing new and innovative…yet. By the way, I have used SUNO because I wanted to see what it can do and I think it is fun to use if you want to hear a cover version for of an existing song. I have put a few of my pre-recorded songs into SUNO and I have enjoyed doing that. There is a 1970s style glam rock demo I have done and I have put that song through SUNO because my singing style is not ideal for the song – so an AI voice copy of what I put down in the demo may be used in the final recording. Perhaps one day I will share that with the world and it will get less than a thousand plays LOL.
I am waiting for the next music revolution…bring it on the children of the revolution!
The video has been created using clips generated by AI. I thought it would be good to have a crowd of new romantic looking people. The style generated by AI is not perfect, but it does what it needs to. I also wanted the crowds to be in a concrete cold environment which represents my memories of urban centres in the late 1970s and early 1980s growing up in Macclesfield and Manchester. Plus, George Orwell in his novel called “1984” envisages a mass surveillance society, hence the many CCTV cameras.
If the licence holder wants me to remove this video please let me know.
