NEW MODEL ARMY – 51St State – 1986

New Model Army is a British post-punk band formed in Bradford, England, in 1980. The band was founded by singer-songwriter Justin Sullivan, along with bassist Stuart Morrow and drummer Rob Heaton. They are known for their intense, politically charged lyrics and a sound that blends elements of punk rock, post-punk, and folk music.

Their early music was heavily influenced by the punk rock movement but also incorporated elements of progressive rock, folk, and even reggae. Over the years, New Model Army’s music evolved, incorporating a broader range of styles, from more melodic rock to darker, atmospheric sounds. They’ve always maintained a strong commitment to social justice, with many of their songs addressing issues such as inequality, political corruption, and human rights.

The band’s breakthrough came with the release of their album No Rest for the Wicked (1985), which gained them a significant following. Their 1989 album Thunder and Consolation is often regarded as one of their finest works, with tracks like “51st State” and “Vagabonds” being particularly memorable.

New Model Army have remained relatively under the radar in mainstream success, but they have cultivated a devoted fanbase, particularly in Europe and parts of the US. Their powerful live performances and passionate fan community have kept them relevant for over four decades. Despite lineup changes over the years, Justin Sullivan has remained the constant member, guiding the band’s vision through their many releases.

The band’s name, “New Model Army,” was inspired by the English Civil War’s New Model Army, a revolutionary force fighting against the monarchy, symbolising the band’s own rebellious and progressive ideals.
